Working with pastels
- The art room has both oil and chalk (also known as soft) pastels
- Link to basic soft/chalk pastel techniques
- When using pastels, keep your work area clear (no other artwork or computers out!)
- Keep pastel boxes neat and organized
- Use both the sides and tip of the pastel to create different lines
- Try blending or not blending
- LAYER!!! Just like colored pencil, more depth and interest is created when you build up thin layers of pigment.
- Be careful of dark colors!
- DO NOT blow chalk dust off your artwork - tap the paper on the table off to the side of your work area and brush all dust into the trash can when you are cleaning up.
- It is VERY IMPORTANT to thoroughly clean your work area (with spray!)
- Wrap your artwork in newsprint to protect it and the other artwork in your drawer
- When completed, spray a thin layer of hairspray over your work to help seal it
